Business & Entrepreneurship | July 15, 2025 Rethinking SME Resilience in a Post-COVID World
By Laura J. Peter-Azeez – Analysis & Commentary
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed deep fragilities in the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector. Research from 2021 laid bare how UK SMEs struggled with plummeting revenues, collapsed supply chains, and evaporating cash reserves. Emergency responses, government subsidies, digital pivots, and business model adjustments, were essential. But the question remains: did these interventions create lasting resilience or merely offer temporary relief?
A54 – Improving SME Resilience Through Sustainability and Digital Transformation
Laura Jummai Peter-Azeez, Dr. Mohammad Mahdi, Professor Vadim Grinevich Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences
1. Introduction This study explores how Nigerian SMEs can build resilience amid crises by adopting digital tools, developing entrepreneurial capabilities, and integrating sustainable practices. Crises such as economic downturns, pandemics, and environmental disruptions have exposed structural weaknesses in SMEs, heightening the need for adaptable and sustainable strategies (DesJardine, Bansal and Yang, 2019).
My work examines how SMEs in Nigeria adapted their value chains under crisis conditions. These insights confirm that resilience cannot be left to chance or one-off interventions.
